“Jobs became harder to get. More rural arrivals in the city found themselves economic refugees. Slums and shacks began to proliferate.” I find this statement really interesting because it makes me think of other developing nations in Asia. All of Asia’s capital cities are experiencing such movement and it becomes part of the cities features. I think that such movement is the result of the economic instability, fewer or no economic opportunities in rural areas and segregated housing policies.  The increase in population creates people to leave rural villages and seek jobs in urban cities. Moreover, the government does little to provide housing for such refugees because the government does not consider rural people as the urban dwellers. The government realizes that rural people cannot pay housing taxes and thus the government does not want to get involved with rural settlers. As the result, rural settlers are ignored and hence, more and more slums begin to proliferate in the city.
