I think that racial stereotyping is portrayed in the book. On page 56, it describes that Asians prefer to do business with West Africans than that of African Americans. One of the reasons is that Asians believe that West Africans are trustful because they pay back their informal loans quickly. On the other hand, Asians perceive African Americans as “devious and dishonest”. I think that racial stereotyping is the result of the social identity. For instance, one’s social identity is based on the kinship and thus, West Africans are seen as the symbol of wealth and power. Asians think that West Africans are socially and economically privileged than that of African Americans. Thus, the book expresses social stratification through the process of racial stereotyping.
