Bizarre Foods

Our class work reminded me of an episode of Bizarre Foods I watched recently in which Andrew Zimmern visits San Francisco and encounters much of what we have been studying. With its history of free love and its culinary tradition, San Francisco seems to be a hub for alternative food sources and modern day “gleaning” communities. Zimmern meets self-proclaimed freegans who participate in the organization Food Not Bombs, which prepares meals for the homeless from food found through dumpster diving. They mention that in a sister organization in Orlando, Florida the police have prevented them from sharing free food with the public, which I thought was interesting. He also meets a young man who organizes community dinners called “The Wild Kitchen” in locations that change and are tweeted or emailed out to followers a few hours before the event; a cool way of creating excitement and community in city life. All food at the dinner is foraged from around the city and presented creatively.
