Wall Street Protest Shows Power of Place

This piece published by the New York Times on Sunday makes a really interesting case for the role of public space in protests in general. It correlates directly with our discussion on Friday as well as drawing on some concepts that we discussed when we read de Certeau. The author addresses how public action can put a place "on the map." "Kent State, Tiananmen Square, the Berlin Wall: we clearly use locales, edifices, architecture to house our memories and political energy. Politics troubles our consciences. But places haunt our imaginations," he writes. It's a relatively short read and it does a good job of continuing the conversation of who exactly comprises the Occupy Movement and what their presence means not only for those who participate but also those who watch and remember.
