Daniel Hewes- NYC High Line

This past weekend I went back home to NYC and ventured to the High Line in the meat packing district. It was really quite remarkable. The city has transformed what was once an above ground subway line into a beautiful outdoor walkway. It begins around 14th street and runs all the way up into the 30s. Along the walkway are trees, shrubs, sculptures, fountains, elegant lighting and lookouts. It really felt as if you were in a forest at some points. You forget that youre in NYC with buildings all around you.

I took some pictures with my blackberry, but they dont do it justice. The first 4 are pictures that I took during the day. You can see the trees lining the walkway, and the crowds of people out enjoying the walk. The 2nd picture is of a theater type seating area where you could sit and watch the cars passing under the walkway going up 10th ave. Very cool use of the space. The 3rd picture really shows the use of space in regards to the buildings the pathway went through. There was even a part where water flowed over part of the path, as shown in the 4th picture. So on a hot summer day you could walk barefoot through the water.

The 5th, 6th and 7th picture were taken later that same day around 10pm. The cellist in the 7th picture really caught my eye as I walked up the walkway. He was in the same space that just hours before was filled with people and arts and craft vendors. Now almost completely empty, he set up seats for walkers to sit and listen to him play. Very zen like to walk along the bamboo lined paths to the sounds of a cello.  The last picture was just of a sign that was along the walkway that I found amusing. The link below is of the High Line's website which has some really high quality pics and maps of the High Line. I really recommend the High Line to everyone next time theyre in NYC.
